Released: Black Box VR Original Video Game Soundtrack

August 15, 2022 in Game Music, Game Audio, Music Production

Whoa! The BBVR OST Has Been Released!

I can’t begin to describe how much fun I had composing these tracks for the Black Box VR Video Game, the primary goal was to use rhythmic entrainment to influence a player’s locomotion while performing reps. Later we noticed a positive response to using motivational lyrics, so we also focused on lyric writing, melody and harmony to help encourage players into giving it their all through subliminal messaging by way of our adaptive music system.

Hearing the track’s playback outside of the game on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music is surreal, it feels like a fantastic accomplishment!

In saying that, I worked with so many talented musicians and producers on this project, so I wanted to give everyone who collaborated on the soundtrack a special mention!

OST Wiki Facts

You can experience the full album on any major music streaming platforms like Spotify or Apple Music. By visiting a Black Box VR gym you can experience the soundtrack in its fully intended format and glory.

Did you know while playing the Black Box VR game that the music system will extend and loop specific track sections if you’re in the middle of important reps, this reduces the downtime experienced when a track has ended and a new one is starting. The system will also remix track stems depending on your performance by adding or removing specific instrumentation. When you’re performing your best work, the crowd becomes aware of the music and will perform crowd chants that sync to the beat and cheer you on! Finally, the music system will provide subtle notifications when your gate or crystal is taking damage, it does this by replacing the kick drum with a tempo-synced heartbeat notification - it’s subtle, but learning these audio cues will provide an advantage in battle and provide you real-time feedback without getting in the way!

Unique Challenges of Interactive Audio in The Last Of Us
July 26, 2018

Video games need to overcome challenges in audio that are not found in other forms of media. Interactive audio researcher Karen Collins [1] weighs in on this phenomenon, explaining that media formats like film and TV use a passive form of immersion, the participant cannot interact with the experience, this is commonly referred to as linear media.  Nonlinear media generally refers to video games and requires an active participant to take part in the experience.  A participant can do anything that’s within the game rules at any moment in time, this level of interactivity raises problems or concerns within game audio, as it too, needs to react and respond in sync with the active player.

Applying Adaptive Music to Turn-Based Strategy Games
June 15, 2018

he basis of this project was to create an adaptive music score for a science fiction turn-based strategy game.  Although the music system will not be delivered to a developer, this project was created under this pretence.  This meant the project was organised for testing upon completion.  The score is generated in the digital audio workstation Cubase, while the music system was put together by middleware software WWISE.
